Vegan Diet May Lower Odds of Having Twins
Dr. Gary Steinman, an obstetrician specializing in multiple births, compared twin birth rates among women who ate a regular diet, vegetarians who ate dairy products, and vegans. He found that the vegans had twins at 1/5 the rate of milk-drinking women. Steinman said insulin-like growth factor (IGF), which is found in milk, may be responsible for the pattern. IGF increases the sensitivity of the ovaries to follicle stimulating hormone, thus increasing ovulation.
