Obsidian is a volcanic glass that has a vitreous luster and is homogeneous in texture. It is commonly black, but cut sections of the glass sometimes appear to be green. Like other volcanic glasses, obsidian is lava that has cooled quickly, without allowing the contained minerals to crystallize.
