Axelrod was an influential American biochemist. In 1970, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Bernard Katz and Ulf von Euler. He was also honored for his work on the release and reuptake of catecholamine neurotransmitters, a class of chemicals in the brain that relay, amplify, and modulate electrical signals between a neuron and another cell. Axelrod made major contributions to the understanding of the pineal gland and how it regulates what daily biological cycle?
