Why Did This Lake Turn Red?
Scientists are puzzled by the dramatic changes in a lake atop Mount Manaro, a 5,000-foot volcano on the South Pacific island of Ambae. The lake has unexpectedly changed color from blue to bright red. Scientists speculate that the shift could be part of a chemical process or the result of gas from molten volcanic rock entering the lake. Mount Manaro, one of four active volcanoes on the island nation of Vanuatu, last erupted in November 2005.
