Fig: The First Domesticated Crop?
Archaeologists report that they have found evidence that ancient people grew fig trees some 11,400 years ago. The find suggests that the fig was the earliest domesticated crop, in use some 1,000 years before wheat, barley, and legumes were being cultivated in the Middle East. Ancient fig remains were found at Gilgal I, a village site in the Jordan Valley, north of ancient Jericho. The finding was reported in the journal Science.
