tympan

DEFINITION: (noun) A musical percussion instrument; usually consists of a hollow cylinder with a membrane stretched across each end. SYNONYMS: drum, membranophone. USAGE: Though the tympan is only heard on three of the album's tracks, its drumbeat is so catchy that it has made the record a hit.
