The “Leggiest” of Them All

A rare species of millipede that was last seen 80 years ago in central California has finally been located. Illacme plenipes has more than 600 legs (average millipedes have about half that number) and thrives only in California. The species was first spotted in 1926 in San Benito County by a scientist who counted a record 750 legs, but it was not seen again until a 28-year-old scientist from East Carolina University happened upon it in San Benito last fall.
