Have Scientists Found the Earth’s Oldest Fossils?
Scientists have identified odd-shaped mounds of dirt in Australia as the Earth's oldest fossils, created by billions of microbes more than 3 billion years ago. The mounds, which are called stromatolites, were first discovered almost three decades ago and have been the source of spirited debate ever since. The newest research identifies seven repeating subtypes of stromatolite, which indicates that the mounds' differing shapes are not random.
