Nakamura Awarded Millennium Prize

Shuji Nakamura, an engineer and professor, has been awarded the $1.2 million Millennium Technology Prize for his inventions in light and laser technology. Nakamura developed the blue light-emitting diode, or LED, widely used in traffic signals and for storing information on optical disks. This is the second time the prize has been awarded; the first recipient was Tim Berners-Lee, who is credited with having invented the World Wide Web.
