Two Species Become One in Lab
Scientists have created a hybrid butterfly by interbreeding two different species in a lab. They believe their process mimics one that actually occurred in nature, as the distinctive red and yellow hybrid is nearly identical to a wild species of butterfly in Colombia known as Heliconius heurippa. The scientific achievement, which is reported in the journal Nature, suggests animal hybrids could be more common than previously thought.
