Sale of Klimt Painting Sets Record

Ronald S. Lauder has paid $135 million for Gustav Klimt's 1907 portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. The sale marks the largest sum ever paid for a painting, eclipsing the $104.1 million paid in 2004 for a Picasso work. The Klimt portrait, which Lauder purchased for the Neue Galerie, was the focus of a restitution battle between the Austrian government and Mrs. Bloch-Bauer's niece, who argued that it was seized by the Nazis during WWII; she won it back in January.
