Norway Begins Building Doomsday Seed Vault
Filed under: add to del.icio.us
Construction began Monday on the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which will serve as a "Noah's Ark" for seeds, ensuring the survival of crop diversity in the event of a global catastrophe. The vault, proposed by Norway a year ago and designed to house as many as 3 million of the world's crop seeds, will be carved into a frozen mountainside on the Svalbard Archipelago. It is scheduled to open and start accepting seeds from around the world in September 2007.
