The daughter of Powhatan, a Native American chief who controlled almost all of tidewater Virginia, Pocahontas was an Algonquian Indian whose life has formed the basis of numerous legends. Because she never learned to write, her story was transmitted to later generations through others and is therefore full of romantic hyperbole. Few people know that 'Pocahontas' was actually her childhood nickname. What was her real name?
