Esperanto is a language with an Indo-European influenced grammar and lexicon, and a spelling, syntax, and pronunciation influenced by Slavonic languages. It was introduced in 1887 by Dr. Zamenhof, a Polish oculist and linguist, who hoped to ease communication between speakers of different languages and foster peace. Although no country has adopted Esperanto officially, it is used by more than 1 million speakers and several international organizations. What is the origin of the language's name?
