Cases of Preemies on the Rise in US

A new study reports that since 1981, the US has seen a dramatic rise in cases of preterm births, in which a baby is born at 37 weeks or sooner, compared with 38 to 42 weeks for a full-term pregnancy. One in eight babies is now born prematurely, with fertility treatments accounting for some of the increase. The US spends an estimated $26 billion a year in care for infants born prematurely with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, hearing and vision problems.

Gertrude Bell

Bell was a British traveler, author, and government official who was one of the builders of the modern state of Iraq. She knew and worked with T. E. Lawrence and was largely responsible for the selection of Faisal I as king of Iraq. She also founded and directed the National Museum in Baghdad. Bell communicated in six languages and was friends with princes and kings. She died from an overdose of sleeping pills in 1926. George Speight Is Arrested

Speight was the principal instigator of the Fiji coup of 2000, in which he kidnapped thirty-six government officials and held them for approximately three months in an attempt to overthrow the constitutional government. Speight found a sizeable number of sympathizers among the ethnic Fijian nationalists, but he was arrested on July 27th along with 369 of his followers. He was tried for treason and is now serving a life sentence. What is thought to have motivated the coup?

Trompe L’oeil

Trompe l'oeil ("trick the eye" in French) refers to an art technique that creates the optical illusion that depicted objects really exist. A Roman period trompe l'oeil mural might show a window that optically enlarges a space. With the understanding of perspective achieved in the Renaissance, painters began to add trompe l'oeil features to their works; for example, a painting might feature a boy who appears to be climbing out of the frame.
