Cases of Preemies on the Rise in US
A new study reports that since 1981, the US has seen a dramatic rise in cases of preterm births, in which a baby is born at 37 weeks or sooner, compared with 38 to 42 weeks for a full-term pregnancy. One in eight babies is now born prematurely, with fertility treatments accounting for some of the increase. The US spends an estimated $26 billion a year in care for infants born prematurely with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, hearing and vision problems.
