Lizzie Borden
Lizzie Borden was a New England spinster who was tried for the brutal axe murders of her father and stepmother in the late 19th century. Because only circumstantial evidence was found, she was acquitted after a two-week trial. However, she was widely believed to be guilty and ostracized by society until her death in 1927. What popular poem helped to perpetuate the idea that she was guilty?
