Liberia Gains Independence

The Republic of Liberia, a country on the west coast of Africa, has recently endured two civil wars that have displaced hundreds of thousands of its citizens and destroyed the Liberian economy. The roots of modern Liberia lie in the American Colonization Society, which helped fund the return of freed slaves to the region from 1817 to 1867 and formed the first Liberian government in the style of Western democracy.
