Oberlin College Founded

Oberlin was the first college in the US to regularly admit African-American students and is also the oldest continuously operating coeducational institution. The college has long been associated with progressive causes, and it was a hotbed of abolitionism and a key stop along the Underground Railroad. Both students and faculty were involved in the controversial Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of a fugitive slave in 1858. Why was Oberlin featured on the cover of Life in 1970?
