Bayreuth Festival
This annual festival is devoted primarily to the performance of operas by Richard Wagner, who conceived of the idea as a showcase for his works. When it opened in 1876, it was an instant artistic success and drew a crowd of illustrious guests. The festival was plagued by financial problems in its early years, but survived through state intervention and the support of influential Wagnerians, including Ludwig II of Bavaria and Adolf Hitler. How did the festival change under the Third Reich?
