Lafayette was a French aristocrat most famous for his participation in the American Revolutionary War and early French Revolution. Considered a national hero in both France and the US, he is one of only six people in history to become an honorary US citizen. Lafayette is also credited with having created the modern French flag in July 1789. He lived in retirement in France during the First Empire, but returned to the US in 1824 to attend the inaugural banquet of what university?
