Are Silver Fillings Safe?

As consumer activists pressed for a ban on mercury-laden amalgam used to fill cavities, government health advisors reviewed an FDA report concluding that the silver fillings are safe. Amalgam has been used by dentists to fill cavities since the 1800s. Scientists found that mercury levels in the blood rise the more mercury fillings a person has, but the FDA claims that exposure levels are well below those known to be harmful.
