The Pied Piper of Hamelin
According to this well known legend, a man claiming to be a rat-catcher arrived in Hamelin, Germany, in 1284. In exchange for the promise of compensation, he lured all of the town's rats into a nearby river with his music. When the citizens refused to pay him the price they had agreed upon, however, he did the same with their children. Among those who immortalized this legend are Goethe, Robert Browning, and the brothers Grimm. What actual event is thought to have inspired the tale?
