Chili Pepper
Chili peppers have been part of the human diet in the Americas since about 7500 BCE. They were domesticated there no later than 3400 BCE and were taken back to Spain by a physician who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage to the West Indies. From Spain they rapidly spread to India, China, and Japan. The amount of "heat" in a chili pepper depends on the amount of capsaicin it contains and is measured on the Scoville scale. How much "hotter" than a habanero chili is police-grade pepper spray?
