Newly-Discovered Planet Puzzles Astronomers

Scientists have discovered an unusually large and light planet orbiting a distant star. According to astronomers with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at Harvard University, the planet, HAT-P-1, is the largest ever detected, roughly 1/3 larger in diameter than Jupiter, but weighing 1/2 as much. Unlike other "gas giants," HAT-P-1 does not have a solid core. It is extremely close to its parent star and makes a complete orbit once every 4.5 days.
