Tainted Spinach Sickens 109 in US
Grocery store shelves have been emptied of fresh spinach as a result of a deadly E. coli outbreak that has affected 19 states. Thus far, the FDA has reported 109 cases of infection; roughly half of them have resulted in hospitalization, and nearly one in six has led to kidney failure. E. coli produces toxins than can lead to bloody diarrhea, damaged kidneys, and death. The FDA is advising people not to eat fresh spinach "until further notice."
