The Vending Machine
Items sold by vending machines vary by country. Today, most vending machines in the US dispense snacks, beverages, and other inexpensive merchandise, but as recently as the 1950s, some machines offered life insurance policies. In Japan, where there is approximately one vending machine for every 23 people, machines sell everything from potted plants to underwear. Who is believed to have invented the first vending machine? What did it dispense?
