Heinz was a pioneer in the American food industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He founded the HJ Heinz Company in 1888, offering "57 varieties" of packaged food products. The company was noted for its fair treatment of workers, and Heinz successfully lobbied the US Congress to introduce laws to improve sanitation and safety within the food preparation industry.
