Mann was a famous education reformer. He was made secretary of the newly created state board of education at a time when the public school system was in bad condition. Within his 12-year period of service, school problems were addressed, training for teachers was established, and teaching equipment was improved. Mann later became the 1st president of Antioch College, where he achieved considerable success demonstrating the practicality of coeducation. How was he related to Nathaniel Hawthorne?
