La Brea Tar Pits
This famous cluster of tar pits is located in Los Angeles, California. Once used as a source of asphalt by early settlers of the Los Angeles area, the pits are now known to contain a large number of mammal fossils from the last ice age. Among the prehistoric species associated with the La Brea Tar Pits are the mammoth, the dire wolf, the short-faced bear, the ground sloth, and the state fossil of California, the saber-toothed cat. What is a tar pit, and how does it form?
