Domenico Scarlatti
Scarlatti was an Italian composer and virtuoso harpsichordist of the Baroque era who was extremely influential in the development of keyboard music. His keyboard sonatas, which number over 500, exemplify his mastery of the homophonic "free style" of composition and are often compared to works by Mozart and Gershwin in their technical complexity. As a young man he is said to have engaged in a keyboard competition with what contemporary composer?
