Turkmenistan’s Leader Promises Free Gas, Power Through 2030

President Saparmurat Niyazov, Turkmenistan's eccentric leader, announced that his Central Asian nation would provide citizens with natural gas and power free of charge through 2030. The promise is an extension of one the president originally made in 1993. Turkmenistan is the second-biggest natural gas producer in the former Soviet Union after Russia. Niyazov has ruled for 20 years and has developed an elaborate personality cult.
