Tarbell was a journalist who achieved fame for her work at the turn of the 20th century. She was a leading muckraker, or an investigative journalist committed to exposing the unethical practices of large corporations. Her reporting for McClure's magazine led to the breakup of the Standard Oil monopoly and is seen as a model for journalism today. In 1894, Tarbell's series of articles on what American president nearly doubled McClure's circulation?
