The Holland Tunnel was designed specifically for automobile traffic and included ventilator systems to reduce carbon monoxide exposure, making it the world's first ventilated tunnel and an engineering marvel of its day. Tunnel construction required workers, nicknamed "sandhogs," to spend large amounts of time under high pressure and to then depressurize upon exiting the tunnel.
