Brazil Becomes a Republic

The Brazilian Republic was declared by Deodoro da Fonseca, a military strongman who played a key role in the overthrow of Pedro II and who subsequently became the first president of Brazil. However, the rivalry of the states and the power of the army in government, especially under Fonseca's unpopular Jacobinist successor, Floriando Peixoto, caused the political situation to remain uneasy. The expanding market for what Brazilian products brought considerable wealth to the republic?
