Marathon Runners Face Increased Skin Cancer Risk
A study by dermatologists at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, found that white marathon runners seem to face an increased risk of skin cancer because of long sun exposure. The 210 marathon runners in the study had more abnormal moles and lesions than a control group, and 24 were referred for surgical treatment. The highest rate of referral, 19%, was among the runners who trained more than 43.5 miles per week.hostelry

Samuel Cunard
Cunard, a Canadian-born British magnate, was a giant of Atlantic shipping. When the British government invited bids (1838) for carrying mail between England and Boston, Cunard's carefully considered plans won him the contract, and he, in association with others, placed four ships in operation, establishing the first regular steamship service between the continents. This was the beginning of the noted Cunard Line. What did Queen Victoria award Samuel Cunard in 1859?Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Opens
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connects the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn in New York City (NYC). From the time of its completion until 1981, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world, with a center span of 4260 ft (1298 m). The bridge furnishes a critical link in the local and regional highway system, and it is widely known today as the starting point for the NYC Marathon. The bridge was the last great public works project overseen by what famous "master builder"?Gargoyles
Gargoyles are waterspouts that were used in medieval Europe to draw rainwater from church and cathedral roofs. They were fashioned imaginatively in the forms of human grotesques, beasts, and demons, supposedly to scare off evil spirits. This form of sculpture reached its peak in the Gothic period and declined with the introduction of lead drainpipes in the 16th century. A similar type of sculpture that does not work as a waterspout and serves only an ornamental function is called what?
