DEFINITION: (noun) A form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.).
SYNONYMS: monocracy, dictatorship, totalitarianism, tyranny, authoritarianism, despotism, absolutism.
USAGE: The people had philosophical problems with the shogunate, but they had to admit that trade and commerce were flourishing under its rule.
