The Dandelion

The dandelion is a perennial herb with a yellow flower head and notched leaves. The flower matures into a globe of fine filaments, called the "dandelion clock." These downy seed carriers are often blown apart by children playing outdoors. Though many consider the dandelion a lawn pest, it is actually quite useful: its young leaves can be eaten as salad greens and the ground, roasted roots are often consumed as a coffee substitute. What beverage is made from the dandelion's flowers?

Surgical Interns Underreport Needle Sticks

A recent study of surgical interns indicates that they grossly underreport needle and sharp instrument injuries. 99% of those surveyed had been injured, while only 49% reported the incidents. Needle stick injuries place them at risk for blood-borne illnesses such as hepatitis and AIDS. While immediate treatment with antiviral drugs may protect residents from infection, the embarrassment and stigma of having made a mistake makes them reluctant to seek medical intervention.
