One Laptop Per Child Begins $100 Laptop Production

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is a non-profit organization committed to providing educational opportunity, in the form of low cost laptops, to children worldwide. Since classes are held outdoors in many developing nations, the OLPC laptop has been designed to withstand high temperatures and moisture, can be recharged by foot-pump, pull-cord, or solar power, has built-in wireless internet, and is equipped with a sunlight readable display. Governments have ordered 3 million of these $176 computers. OLPC hopes to eventually bring the price down to $100.

Apartheid

Apartheid was a system of racial segregation enforced in South Africa for almost 50 years that was legally abolished in the early 1990s. Apartheid served not only to separate whites from non-whites, but also non-white groups from one another. The 1959 Sharpeville Massacre, in which police officers opened fire on unarmed protesters, killing 69 and injuring 186, was a major turning point in public opinion of South African apartheid.
