Slobodan Miloševic

Miloševic was the leader of the Serbian Communist Party and the president of Serbia from 1989–1997 and of Yugoslavia from 1997–2000. Following the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, he promoted the idea of a “greater Serbia” and supported Serbian militias in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. In 2002, a UN criminal tribunal charged Miloševic with crimes against humanity and genocide; he died, however, before his trial concluded. What medical condition may have played a role in his death?

Silly Putty

When scientists tried to find a rubber substitute for the US during WWII, they stumbled upon a product that would entertain children for generations. Silly Putty is silicone plastic “clay” sold in an egg-shaped plastic container and marketed as a children's toy. As an inorganic polymer, it can pick up ink when pressed against a newspaper; the imprint can then be stretched in any direction. It also bounces, breaks, and “melts” into a puddle. What causes these unusual flow characteristics?

Children Need Fat in Diet

Though many parents, nervous about the rising levels of childhood obesity, have cut fat from their children's diets, health experts say kids need fat to develop and grow normally. A study of 10 children and 10 adults found that youngsters burn more body fat than adults relative to their total calorie expenditure. The study's authors say that the high levels of fat oxidization in prepubescent children may result from normal growth processes and recommend that about a third of the calories in a child's diet come from fat.
