In the 1950s, Africanized honeybees escaped the Brazilian lab where they had been bred and mated with various native bee populations. They are commonly known as "killer bees," and are particularly dangerous because of their tendency to swarm and attack in groups. Though their venom is no more potent than that of normal honeybees, victims may die from the massive number of stings. These bees were first found in Louisiana in 2005, and they now appear to have colonized New Orleans. Experts recommend that anyone working outdoors in the area exercise caution and take cover if attacked.

Honey is the sweet, viscous fluid honeybees produce from flower nectar. The worker bee transports the nectar to its hive in its honey sac, and enzymes in this sac convert the nectar into honey. Bees produce honey in much greater amounts than is necessary for survival, and humans have made use of this excess honey for centuries.
