Can a Tonsillectomy Really Be Pain-Less?
A new "intracapsular" tonsil removal method, which uses a technique that removes only 90% of the tonsil tissue and spares the tonsil capsule, has been shown to cause less postoperative bleeding and discomfort than traditional tonsillectomy. The findings, based on a review of 2,944 tonsillectomy patients' medical charts, indicate that while the new procedure may have fewer adverse side-effects initially, the surgery is not always successful. Of the 1,731 patients who underwent the new intracapsular technique, 11 had to go in for revision tonsillectomies after tonsil tissue grew back.
